Sweden by train

Getting to Malmö

Sweden is about forty minutes from Central Station. The train is simple, but you need a specific ticket and ID.

How long does it take and how often does it run?

About 40 minutes from København H to Malmö C by Öresundståg train. The 25 minutes sometimes quoted refer to the journey from the airport. During the day, a train leaves about every 15 minutes, and less often in the evening. These times are valid until 12 December 2026.

How much does it cost and where can you buy a ticket?

An adult single ticket costs 96 DKK according to DSB. You can buy it on the Öresundståg website, at station ticket machines or at 7-Eleven shops in stations. You cannot buy it on board. Rejsekort also works as far as Malmö C.

The Copenhagen Card does not cover this journey. The City Pass only covers Danish zones: according to its zone list, it is not suitable for Sweden either.

What ID should you bring?

Valid ID is mandatory, including for a day return:

  • EU and EEA citizens: passport or national ID card. A driving licence is not enough, except for Nordic citizens.
  • Other travellers: passport, with a visa if necessary.

Going to Sweden, checks generally take place at Hyllie, the first Swedish station. On the way back, official sources differ on checks on the Danish side: keep the same document with you. The conductor may also ask for ID along with your ticket.

What currency is used in Malmö?

The Swedish krona (SEK), which is different from the Danish krone. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted and many shops only accept card or mobile payments. Euro cash is generally not accepted.
